A List of Forthcoming Events can be found at the foot of this Page
The main event of the Club Year is the annual Devon Coastal Run which takes place on the third weekend of July (the 2015 Coastal Run took place on Sunday 19th) and takes in some 70 miles of Devons most picturesque and glorious scenery. Commencing at Haldon on the outskirts of Exeter, entrants proceed along the side of the River Exe through rolling countrytside to Starcross, then passing through Dawlish and Teignmouth to continue over the picturesque Shaldon Bridge which crosses the River Teign and on to Torbay, (with a stop at Quay West, Goodrington Sands). The route then turns inland to Totnes, Buckfastleigh, the charming old town of Ashburton, passing the lovely old church and then through the centre which is known as "The Bull Ring", then onwards to the Rallyfield at Mill Marsh Park at Bovey Tracey.
Vehicles assembling here from Mid-day on, drivers and passengers then go on to enjoy hunting through the various autojumble stands, admiring up to 250 assembled vehicles from Motor Cycles, Vintage Cars (pre 1930) Post Vintage (pre-war), Classic Cars up to the early 1980`s, Vans, Lorrys, Fire Engines, Busses, Coaches, Heavy Commercials and Military/Emergency vehicles.
A Band is usually on hand to supply the musical entertainment and an Autojumble where you can search for this elusive part plus food and ice cream vendors if the inner self needs refueling..
Vehicles on display at Mill Marsh Park Bovey Tracey
During the Summer Months the evening meetings can be visits to various places of interest, such as the Fire Service Control Room, this we really enjoyed by club members who gained considerable knowledge as to how these highly dedicated people look after us as residents. During the long light eveings, runs to Country Pubs in the heart of Dartmoor are also highly enjoyed. The annual bar-b-q, always the month following the Coastal Run, a "thank you" to all those members who gave their time and hard work to make the July event the success it has been for the past 33 years is always well attended, being August it has been wet on occassions but the fun still goes on! With Autumns arrival in September we return to the "Club Pub" at Kenn where the indoor programme restarts.
A name from the past is back, John Bull Tyres. Based in Retford Nottinghamshire the Company is now producing and expanding its range of tyres for Vintage Commercial Vehicles. We understand that these tyres are faithful replicas of the original. We give an example of sizes available: 900 x 24. 900 x 20, 825 x 20, 750 x 20, 750 x 16. If you are looking for tyres then it may be worth contacting this firm on 01777 816347, they have a web site www.johnbulltyres.com.
Neither the writer nor the HTC have any connection with this firm nor any insight into their quality, we are simply bringing this product to the attention of members who must judge for themselves.

Drive It Day
This year the htc joined forces with the Military Vehicle Trust for a run out to Castle Drogo at Drewsteignton, with starting points in Exeter (Kenn), Buckfastleigh Railway Station and Bickleigh Castle. After an early lunch for those entrants so interested attending vehicles made their way to Bovey Tracey with an eta of 2.0 p.m. for a 2.30 p.m. start for the 12 mile drive to Castle Drogo for a cream tea. The weather was fair, overcast but no rain. We all left Bovey in convoy with motor cycle outriders. All very professionally organised and executed by Rod. On arrival at our destination the vehicles were parked in the drive leading down to the Castle and we made our way up to the cafe for an excellent cream tea. I was disappointed by the support given to the event by htc members but those who attended had an excellent and enjoyable outing. The MVT even organised a fly past of a WW2 airplane, this also escorted our convoy up the valley to Drogo. Again well done Rod and many thanks.

40th Aniversary of the H.T.C
The weekend celebrations kicked off on Friday eveing around 7.30 p.m.with dinner at the Dolphin Hotel in Bovey Tracey who laid on first class food for us. This was followed by surperb entertainment by the Kelly Quarry Blasters who reformed after retirement some years ago especially for the Club. They have not lost any of their skills in the art of entertainment and in fact they enjoyed getting together again so much they have decided to do some further gigs in the future. The evening ended around 11.0 p.m and was greatly enjoyed by all who attended. Celebrations continue on Saturday afternoon with a drive to a local motor museum.
Drive it Day
This year the Historic Transport Club decided that we should join in and so it was agreed that those members who wished to do so would turn up around 3 in the afternoon at Castle Drogo, Drewsteignton, Devon. This is the last Castle to be built in the Country and the Lutyens designed building was built over a number of years between 1911 and 1930. It was the dream of Julius Drew who founded the "Home & Colonia" chain which I am sure older readers will well remember. An area was marked out for us in the carpark and there was a good turnout for the event. We all sat round a large table in the cafe, many opting for the Devonshire Cream Tea. Whilst the weather was not all that is to be desired it was a very enjoyable afternoon. Very worthwhile and our thanks to Jonathan and Julian for arranging it all.

MoT & Exemption Declaration
When a vehicle is taxed, if it is subject to an MoT, then an original MoT certificate is still required. if it is a pre 1960 vehicle, it will be exempt from an MoT. However, DVLA have indicated that if it is exempt and is being taxed for the first time, or a tax renewal is being done (excluding online) then there is still a requirement for an MoT exemption form V112 or V112G to be completed. We must thank the FBHVC for this information.

DVLA Red Tape Cuts
From December 16th 2013 motorists will no longer need to have their motor insurance certificates checked when getting their vehicle tax. The change was announced by Roads Minister Robert Goodwill as part of a number of measures to get rid of red tape. Another of the changes relates to Sorn declarations which have up to now has involved motorists to making an annual declaration. In future it will only be necessary to tell the DVLA once when they declare their vehicle is off the road.
A further measure which will take place from October 2014 is the scrapping of the Tax disc which has been displayed on vehicle windshields for in excess of 90 years.
MOT Exemption Problems for Classic Car Owners
Thousands of owners of pre 1960 classic vehicles could well struggle to get their newly exempted cars taxed due to ongoing techinical issues between the DVLA and VOSA according to a story from the industry body IAAF.
Owners of pre 1960 manufactured cars have been complaining of problems obtaining tax discs due to the DVLA`s computer systems not recognising the MOT exemption, this exemption was introduced in November 2012. The DVLA admitted that it had encountered technical issues regarding it conputer systems recognising the MOT exemptions for some pre 1960 vehicles but added that it is working on rectifying the issue and that it should not arise again when the vehicle affected is relicensed. Whilst it was unable to say how many vehicles were affected it stated that the problem only related to pre 1960 vehicles where the MOT was due toexpire around the period the vehicle was being re-licenced and that a "very low" number of owners would encounter problems.
David Whitbread of the DVLA said " The Electrinic Vehicle Licensing System is linked to the MOT Database run by the Vehicle Operator Services Agency. Due to the short period of time between the announcement of the exemption in February and its introduction in November, the DVLA was unable to make the necessary system changes to remove the usual MOT check that vehicles go through before the tax disc is issued."
"Customers who are unable to license via the Electrionic Vehicle Lincensing System can license at a Post Office but they will require a completed V112 (Declaration of Exemption from MOT Testing) where the customer declares that their vehicle is exempt". (Your editor has used this exemption in past years and the Post Office staff will sometimes tell you they have no such form, if you are told this then simply ask them to go and look for it or refer the matter to a more senior employee).
Classic Car enthausiasts are understandably annoyed and the owner of an MG YA stated that getting a tax disc has been a nightmare, he tried online, no success, phoned the DVLA who advised going to a Post Office, he did this and they also refused a tax disc because the staff told him he needed an MOT.
Last MINI to leave Longbridge
A late 1970`s Mini Clubman which was dumped by workers at the Longbridge plant after having what was thought to be a container drop on it is to be put up for auction. The ruined vehicle was hidden for years in one of the tunnels underneath the factory until its excavation in 2011.
Good news for all classic car enthausiasts in the latest budget. The MP for East Yorkshire, Greg Knight who drives a 1972 Jensen Interceptor and who is a member of the JOC has long campaigned for a change in the Excise Dudy Exemption which only applies to pre 1973 vehicles. The 25 year rolling exemption was removed by the last Labour government. Following representations to the Chancellor, he is now rolling this forward a year from April 2014. So if you own a 1973 car you will have a saving of £220 next year.

Press Release from the FBHVC = Drive It Day - April 21 2013
Drive it Day encourages the 500 plus club members and supporters, plus other historic vehicle enthusiasts to use yesterday`s two, three, four or more wheeled vehicles for a day to celebrate the UK`s transport heritage at its finest. All owners of historic cars are encouraged to take to the roads on the 21st April to demonstrate how many historic and interesting machines are still on the road today.
Most FBHVC members already have planned to make the most of this day by using the public roads, meeting at local venues, places of interest, including museums such a Beaulieu, National Trust and heritage properties, transport cafes, like the Ace, local beauty spots or even car parks.
The FBHVC team will be attending a number of the many events. In particular they will have an attendance at the Heritage Motor Centre at Gaydon, which is the home to the world`s largest collection of British historic cars. Centrally positioned Gaydon would make a good start point, intermediate waypoint to visit en-route, or an excellent location to finish a day`s run.
In support of "Drive it Day", the Heritage Motor Cenytre will offer a special adnission price of £5.00 for museum entry for those arriving in historic vehicles. In addition a discounted rate will be offered for the Land Rover Experience. This is a ride as a passenger, through the steep and twisting mulit-terrain track, either in a modern Discovery or an early Series 111.
Drive it Day began in 2005 to celebrate the running of the 1000 mile trial which began on 23 April 1900. The name is a registered trade mark of the FBHVC.
For those of our members interested in railways and especially the GWR, we thought we had better advise that the above unique steam railmotor will be visiting the Dart Valley Railway whose operating centre is based at Buckfastleigh Station, South Devon, over the half term period, that is, February 16th to the 24th. We understand the car will be operational over both weekends and making four trips per day along the picturesque line to Staverton and Totnes. The return trip will take approximately 75 minutes. You have a second chance to catch this Railmotor in the South West as it will be at Bishops Lydeard on the West Somerset Railway for March 18th and 19th.(Monday and Tuesday).
Your editor travelled down to the Liskeard/Looe branch last November where it was in steam over two weekends and it is an absolutely spectacular sight to see. Railcar 92, which is the trailer unit to 93 has just been restored and underwent trials at Llangollen last month. We understand it will be reunited with the steam unit for the Llangollen Steam Gala which takes place in the Spring. Further information on this project can be found at www.railmotor93.org
A business which some of our members will I am sure be interested in specialises in hand crafted models of a very high standard, mainly aircraft at present but I understand they will undertake special one off commissions. Fabricated in mahogany and finihed with up to 26 coats of paint these are "big boys toys". The firm is called Bravo Delta Models Ltd and they can be contacted at Dial Post House, Dial Post, West Sussex, RH13 8NQ - tel: 01493 710207 - mobile 07745 045882. The website is www.bravodeltamodels.co.uk - well worth a look
News on E10 Petrol (Gasoline)
It seems that our belief that E10 Petrol would not be introduced to the U.K. marketplace until 2015 is now misplaced. It has recently emerged from a meeting with the Department for Transport that E10 could be with us on garage forecourts as early next year, 2013.
The specifications for this fuel are expected to be in place by the end of 2012 and fuel retailers are to receive guideance over the introduction of E10 petrol. As far as we are aware there is no planned roll-out for E10 and currently not all fuel terminals have blending facilities for ethanol. It is therefore to be presumed that the introduction of this fuel throughout the Country will be piecemeal.
It is already well known that E10 is unsuitable for historic vehicles unless the necessary steps have been taken by owners to proof the fuel systems. We should like to make members aware therefore that E10 may start to appear on U.K. fuel forecourts in early 2013 and that they should avoid using it in their vehicles unless the necessary measures have been adopted to ensure its compatibility. All pumps selling this fuel will have to be clearly marked E10 and also carry a warning message. Super grade fuels like Shell V Power will continue to have no more than 5% ethanol and therefore should offer the necessary protection.
MoT Exemption News
The undermentioned article is taken from the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs website and to keep abreast of all the latest news we do recommend you have a look at the site, follow the link www.fbhvc.co.uk
Historic Vehicles MoT Exemption Review. Mike Penning, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Transport, has announced the results of the Historic Vehicles MoT Exemption Review. The DfT is in favour of exemption for pre-1960 vehicles and it is proposed this will take effect from 18 November 2012. Owners of exempted vehicles will be able to take them for a voluntary test under the new regulations. The FBHVCís initial response is a guarded welcome to a result that matches the wishes of the majority of respondents to the Federationís MoT survey. We hope to get more information about the detail of the proposals from the DfT in due course, in order to make a proper assessment Ė particularly about passenger carrying vehicles in commercial use which we were surprised to note are also to be exempt from MoT testing. In general historic vehicle owners are law abiding and safety conscious and are aware that they have a duty to ensure their vehicles are in a roadworthy condition and accept the exemption from MoT testing is not an excuse for poor maintenance.
The March 2012 edition of this magazine is a must for all members of the Historic Transport Club as you will find within a four page feature of the club`s own Leyland Octopus, there are excellent pictures and a detailed history of the vehicle from 1951 to the present day. When this issue is now longer available from your local newsagent back copies can be obtained from "Back Numbers Dept.,Classsic and Vintage Commercials,Kelsey Publishing Group, Cudham Tythe Barn, Berrys Hill, Cudham, Kent, TN16 3AG.
The Scam below is featured on the CanAm Club website, this is a first class club for those interested in American and Canadian Vehicles and is based in Dorset. a very active Club with many activities.
"Have come across one of the more believable scams whilst selling..........
A man rings up having got your number from the advert (in this case an Ebay classified) and is very interested in the car. Wants to negociate a price and also delivery to port. Says car will be going to Scandinavia (in this case Sweden) and will transfer payment into bank.........no Nigerian cheques here..... He asks for copies to be faxed, yes faxed to his office in Sweden of the docs including log book and also a bill of sale. Luckily, I obscured certain vital information just to be safe and the man phoned several times to persuade me to send full details for import purposes (not true). At this point the man would have been able to apply for the log book and being in posession of a bill of sale ( I sent an invoice with amount payable and NOT a bill of sale) could, in theory, lawfully own your car. Any attempt to take your car is then not considered theft and you've gotta problem. This feller seems to target modestly priced cars which I guess he hopes are parked outside at the owners address.......easy to take I suppose........!!! This man is very plausible and used the name Mats with me and also fake Ebay username and feedback in addition to an iffy website. BE WARNED..........."
It just shows how careful you have to be now when you sell a vehicle, Ed.

The Historic Commercial Vehicle Run took place earlier this month and for those interested in this event you will find a link in this article which will take you to a very interesting web site, that of "Bonzer Photos". This site is well worth looking at as many of the vehicless entered have been photographed on route and copies are available for purchase.
In addition to this event there are many other photos of vehicles competing at various venues.
Vehicle Heights & Low Bridges
The Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs have an article in their 2nd Newsletter of 2011 in respect of the above and it has been requested that participating Clubs should bring the following paragraph to members notice.
"In general, bridges with a clear height of five metres (16ft 6 inches) or less are required to be signed with their height. Should you be aware of a bridge locally to you that is missing its sign on one side or the other (or in your opinion is insufficiently signed) please report this to the council with responsibility for highways. Likewise, if you know of a road with overhanging trees, this should also be reported to the authority, who have a statutory duty to coordinate landowners trimming trees located on the highway."
Luckly the Leyland Atlantian pictured had its top removed intentionally by Devon General where it saw service in Torbay during the Summer months of the 1960`s and beyond.
